9. Why reading means so much to me
/ri:d/ noun
Look at and comprehend the meaning of (written or printed matter) by interpreting the characters or symbols of which it is composed.
To me, reading is a way of convincing myself that I'm doing something productive even though I am having so much fun reading instead of doing work (Yes, I'm a workaholic, but that is another story).
But reading is so much more than that, reading is a form of entertainment that has survived through time and has now reached out modern times. If something has survived for so long and has accompanied so many people through their best and worst moments, Why shouldn't I try it? Yes, I know other things have survived through time and are not necessarily good; but this, I assure you, is worth the time you put in.
Reading a book is such a journey, really. You simply don't expect how a book is going to begin, it may begin with you running away from something, or presenting the people who are going to accompany you through these adventures or it may begin with your own death. It is just fascinating.
What I, in a way, understand and, in another way, don't is why people have stopped reading so drastically. Books are a window to the past, to other worlds, to someone's mind... They are far too precious not to explore them and the secret messages behind their pages. I do understand that with TVs, streaming devices, phones, computers... there is only too much to do to sit down and read something. Furthermore, our society, like I said in a previous post, likes instant things and books are not, precisely, instant. Also, schools make you read things that you don't want to or are not prepared to, so most people end unjust hating books for this.
I think that I love books so much because my parents introduced me to reading very early on and, thanks to that, I started drinking every book they gave me. So now it's like an instinct to do so. Thanks to this "instinct" I would love to study literature: I want to read it all. I also reckon that my dream would just be to write a book, something personal, something that screams me.
