6. Julie and The Phantoms
It seems like the only thing I do is watching series! But I just can't help it. The next series I fell in love with is also from Netflix and it's called "Julie and the phantoms" (tell your friends).
The show is about Julie, a teen who lost her mom only a year ago and hasn't sung or played the piano ever since. One day, tiding up her mom's music studio she plays a CD by Sunset Curve and the ghosts of 3 members of this 90's band appear. Their names are Luke, Reggie and Alex; they died right before their big debut due to food poisoning from hotdogs. Suddenly, they discover that they can be seen and heard by the living only when they sing with Julie.
This is yet another Netflix show that amazed me. You can just sense how the main characters are also best friends: The jokes, the dialogues, the non-verbal language between them.... it just screams friendship! Season 1 also leaves you wanting for the main ship to end up together but, since it is between Luke and Julie, it is not possible because Luke is, unfortunately, a ghost. What amazed me is that Maddison Reyes (Julie) is only 16 (2004) and Charles Gillespie (Luke) is 21 (1999), so it only makes sense that we didn't get a kiss or anything like that. Another ship from the show is the one between Alex and Willie, another ghost. About this relationship, I can only say: Thank you and congratulations to Netflix for introducing an LGBT main character. This means so much since it will show that it's ok for young queer kids to be like that and feel that way.
From the beginning, I also got Disney vibes and they were confirmed when I discovered that the choreographer is Kenny Ortega, who has worked in High School Musical, Descendants, Newsies, Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana; among others. Also, I watched far too many interviews with the actors and Kenny Ortega and there's a hope to make a season 2 and go on tour, which I would absolutely die to go see.
I must also highlight the amazing songs, with which I've been obsessed ever since. I especially loved the ones that they perform together (Bright, Flying Solo, Finally Free, Edge of great and Stand Tall), the one Julie and Luke dance together (with was also written by the Maddie and Charlie, the actors) (Perfect Harmony) and the one that Luke sings to his mom (Unsaid Emily). The last song leaves you in tears because, before dying, Luke had a huge fight with his mom and run away from home. I will live a link to the full soundtrack here, feel free to check it out:
