Practice 12: Problem-solution paragraphs: Bullying

    Today we learnt about
problem-solution paragraphs and to prove what we had learnt we had to write a problem-solution paragraph about either bullying, pollution or child labour. I chose to write about bullying. We obviously had to follow the steps:

 1. Brainstorming
 2. Gathering/outline
 3. First draft
 4. Edit the first draft
 5. Final draft

BRAINSTORMING:

PARAGRAPH 1

  • Definition of bullying: seek to harm, intimidate, or coerce (someone perceived as vulnerable).
  • The most common type of bullying is School Bullying and it can develop in many different ways:
    • Physical Bullying (hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property).
    • Verbal Bullying (name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse).
    • Social Bullying (to harm someone’s social reputation and / or cause humiliation).
    • Cyber Bullying (Intentional and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, phones, and other electronic devices).
  • Bullying can happen at any stage of life:
    • School bullying.
    • College bullying.
    • Workplace bullying.
  • It is out duty to prevent bullying at any stage of life and support anti-bullying laws (such as laws in school, laws in colleges, cyber bullying).
  • 1 out of 5 students aged 12-18 suffered bullying last year.
  • I suffered bullying at high-school so I had to change schools
    • This showed me how a good education can change everything: I was treated more than well in the new school.
PARAGRAPH 2
  • Educated people well from an early age
  • Not only at school, but also at home. It's the parents' duty to do so.
    • Not only at school, but also at home. It's the parents' duty to do so.
    • At home: Kids tend to unconsciously imitate their parents, so it's important to set a good example
  • By providing a good education at an early age, we are avoiding that bullying happens not only at those "early stages", but also at others that are not so early, such as in the workplace.

OUTLINE:

PARAGRAPH 1:

  • TS: Nowadays more and more people suffer bullying, which is a practice that seeks to harm, intimidate or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable.
  • SUPPORTING SENTENCES:
    • Bullying is not a new problem in our modern society, but it has been getting more and more visibility with the years.
    • There are several types of bullying: Physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and cyber bullying.
    • Bullying can happen at any stage of life: School bullying, college bullying and workplace bullying.
    • Statistics: 1 out of 5 students aged 12-18 suffered bullying last year.
    • It is our duty to prevent this from happening at any stage of life, any kind of bullying.
    • There are also bullying laws that should be supported so their effectivity is improved.
  • CS: All in all, although bullying is not a new problem, it is getting more and more visibility and we, as a society, must seek efficient solutions to this problem immediately.
PARAGRAPH 2:
  • TS: Through the years there have been proposed multiple solutions, but the one that has been more effective is receiving a good emotional education at an early age.
  • SUPPORTING SENTENCES:
    • Receiving a good emotional education is a duty that has to be carried out not only by schools, but also by parents and legal tutors.
      • Schools: Programs to involve children with this problem, making them see that this problem is a serious one and preventing that they ever become bullies.
      • At home: Kids tend to unconsciously imitate their parents, so it is crucial for them to set a good example
    • By providing a good education at an early age, we are avoiding that bullying happens not only at those "early stages", but also at others that are not so early, such as in the workplace or in college.
  • CS: In conclusion, bullying is a serious problem that can be eradicated providing a good emotional education at an early age, avoiding, this way, that bullies get away with harming people.

FIRST DRAFT

Nowadays more and more people suffer bullying, which is a practice that seeks to harm, intimidate or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable. Bullying is not a new problem in the modern society, but it has been getting more and more visibility with the years. On the one hand, there are several types of bullying: Physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and cyber bullying. On the other hand, bullying can also happen at any stage of life: School bullying, college bullying and even workplace bullying. Furthermore, statistics say that 1 out of 5 students aged 12-18 suffered bullying last year, which is a worrying piece of data to many people and institutions, that are now suggesting more serious solutions. All in all, although bullying is not a new problem, it is getting more and more visibility, so now society feels obligated to seek efficient solutions to this problem immediately.

Through the years multiple solutions have been proposed, but the one that has been more effective is providing children with a good emotional education at an early age. Receiving a good emotional education is a duty that has to be carried out not only by schools, but also by parents and legal tutors. As for schools, a good measurement to implement would be creating programs to involve children with this problem, making them see that this is serious problem that they can help solve. As for what parents can do at home, it is crucial to set a good example since kids tend to unconsciously imitate their parents. In conclusion, bullying is a serious problem that can be eradicated providing a good emotional education at an early age not only at schools but also at home.
