49. Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen is a musical that I recently discovered and I absolutely love. It is about a boy (Evan Hansen) who suffers from panic attacks and social anxiety and lives in a "broken home" (It's only him and his mom). Evan is a tree geek and while he was working in the forest during summer he falls down a tree and breaks his arm. When the new school year begins, he is commended by his psychologist to write letters to himself, while he is doing so he encounters Connor Murphy, a trouble maker, who decides to sign his cast but, when he finds out that in this letter to himself (that begins with "Dear Evan Hansen" that is why the musical is called like that) Evan has written that he loves his sister (Connor's sister is Zoe Murphy), he steals the letter and runs away. Later we will discover that Connor has committed suicide and the only thing left with him was Evan's letter, so Connor's parents think that they were friends. This begins a succession of events that lead up to Evan lying to Connor's family and to the whole world after he does a speech where he talks about Connor.
This musical is beautiful and devastating at the same time, it talks about very delicate tabu topics, like suicide or social exclusion. Even though I have only known about this musical for a few months, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys good entertainment.
